Silver State Counseling and Therapy owners Ryan and Katie met and worked together in the mental health field since 2009. After gaining knowledge and experience at different agencies in town they deci ded to open their own practice and Silver State Counseling and Therapy was established in 2015 here in Reno, Nevada. Since then we have worked on growing our team, check out our providers below.
Ryan Clifford is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist working with individuals, couples, and families of all ages. In 2013 he graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno, with his Masters degree in Educational and Counseling Psychology. He began working in the mental health field in 2009 after earning his Bachelors degree in Psychology in 2008. He has experience working with a broad spectrum of clients and mental health issues. Ryan’s current treatment passions are delivering effective care to those with trauma histories. This ranges from patients that have experienced a single disturbing incident to those that have suffered multiple traumatic incidents resulting in complex trauma. Ryan has been furthering his ability to treat trauma effectively by becoming trained in EMDR. Ryan’s other areas of specialties are anxiety, depression, anger, and interpersonal issues.
Kathleen (Katie) Clifford is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist working with individuals, couples, and families. She started her career in mental health after graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from California State University, Sacramento in 2009. Following a therapist established treatment plan she worked with clients in their homes and in the community while pursuing higher education. She graduated from University of Nevada, Reno with a Master’s degree in Counseling and Educational Psychology in 2014. Since then she has been working with clients of all backgrounds, enjoying the challenges of a diverse caseload. Recognizing the need for trauma informed care, Katie went on to become EMDR trained through the EMDR Institute. In her free time Katie enjoys hiking the beautiful areas surrounding Reno.
Steffani Amezquita is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She is a third generation Nevadan who graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno with her bachelors and master’s degrees in social work. She utilizes an eclectic approach to treatment with clients and has formal training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Exposure and Response Prevention and Cognitive Behavioral therapy. While she finds training to be essential, Steffini believes the most important part of therapy is the relationship between therapist and client. She believes in truly connecting with her clients and creating an environment that is welcoming and inclusive of every human being, no matter their age, gender, race, sexual orientation, or cultural background. For self-care you will find Steffini training for a marathon, cooking or spending time with her family and animals.
Chris Zukowski is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor working with children, families, couples, and individuals. Chris creates a safe space with emphasis on building relationships using an eclectic form of psychotherapy that draws on concepts to help individuals better understand their experiences and develop coping skills to reduce anxiety, depression, grief/loss, and struggles with life changes. While she is passionate about helping individuals and couples work through life challenges, she specializes in play therapy working with children ages 4-11.
Laurie Crom is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Nationally Certified Counselor. She works with children, teens, families, couples, parents, and individuals. Laurie graduated with her Masters Degree from the University Nevada, Reno in Counseling and Educational Psychology in 1993. She has more than 18 years of experience working directly with children and families as a school counselor for the Washoe County School District. Laurie enjoys hiking, skiing, traveling and spending time with family and friends.
Kassie Ugalde is a Certified Professional Counselor and National Professional Counselor working with individuals, couples, families, and adolescents. She has worked in the mental health field since 2007. She graduated with her Master's degree in Counseling and Educational Psychology from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2013. Since, Kassie has worked with a wide variety of client backgrounds and mental health issues, specializing in trauma and anxiety. She also has experience treating active duty military and veterans.
*Immediate openings for Hometown Health, Prominence, and self-pay. Lauren McCarthy grew up in Red Bluff California and moved to Reno, Nevada in June 2016. Lauren received her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from John F. Kennedy University in Pleasant Hill, California and went on to earn her Master’s degree in Counseling and Psychology Education from University Nevada, Reno in 2019. Lauren is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Intern as well as a Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor Intern. With an interest and concentration in trauma informed practices, Lauren believes in a person-centered therapeutic approach, having client needs and goals at the forefront of treatment. She is certified in Crisis Disaster and Trauma Training through Association for Advanced Training in Behavioral Sciences as well as having received her first certificate of completion for EMDR training and will be pursuing full certification in 2022. Lauren works with all ages and demographics but has concentrated especially in working with adolescents and couples. For self-care, Lauren likes to be outside hiking with her dog Quinn, riding her horse and spending time with family.
Brandi Finch is the Office Manager with Silver State Counseling and Therapy. She works extensively with the Clinical Director and providers on insurance, clerical, and client matters. Brandi recently moved to Reno from a small town in Wyoming where she was born and raised. She went to college at Western Wyoming Community College where she received an associate degree in General Science with a focus in Psychology in 2015. While in the middle of continuing her education, she was unexpectedly diagnosed with cancer and forced to put school on hold. After treatment and persistence, she will be ecstatically returning to school in the Spring of 2020 at the University of Nevada, Reno to pursue her passion in Environmental Studies with goals of positively changing the state of the environment. Although she has changed her educational goals; Brandi still strongly believes in the importance of mental health and loves being apart of the outstanding team at Silver State Counseling.
